An Atlas of Modern Landscapes: Corbusier Exhibit at the Moma



MoMa presents its first major exhibition on the work of Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, 1887–1965), encompassing his work as an architect, interior designer, artist, city planner, writer, and photographer.

Robert Irwin Scrim Veil (1977) at the Whitney



Scrim veil—Black rectangle—Natural light, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1977), by California Light and Space artist,Robert Irwin  is a large-scale installation that uniquely engages the Whitney’s iconic Breuer building and the natural light that emanates from the large window in the fourth floor gallery space. Part of the Whitney’s collection, the work was made specifically for the Museum’s fourth floor. It has not been exhibited since its 1977 debut, a pivotal moment that would set the course for Irwin’s subsequent artistic practice.

Protocols, Obsessions, Positions at Storefront for Art and Architecture


POP: Protocols, Obsessions, Positions, investigates what constitutes a position in architecture today and how that might be generated through the architect’s drawing. The exhibition presents 30 original drawings of the Storefront gallery space at 97 Kenmare Street by an international group of architects asked to go “from protocols, to obsessions, to positions.”

Punk at the MET



The Met's spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will examine punk's impact on high fashion from the movement's birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today.

James Turrell transforms the Guggenheim



James Turrell’s first exhibition in a New York museum since 1980 focuses on the artist’s groundbreaking explorations of perception, light, color, and space, with a special focus on the role of site-specificity in his practice. At its core is Aten Reign (2013), a major new project that recasts the Guggenheim rotunda as an enormous volume filled with shifting artificial and natural light. One of the most dramatic transformations of the museum ever conceived, the installation reimagines Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic architecture—its openness to nature, graceful curves, and magnificent sense of space—as one of Turrell’s Skyspaces, referencing in particular his magnum opus the Roden Crater Project (1979– )

Fragments: Renzo Piano at the Gagosian



“Fragments,” is an exhibition of more than thirty years of architectural projects by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Equal parts library reading room, school classroom, and natural history gallery, the exhibition consists of twenty-four tabletop displays of scale models, drawings, photographs, and video. Each tells the involved, inspiring story of the design process of a single building, from museums, libraries, and airports to private residences. Among these projects are Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; The Menil Collection, Houston; Kansai International Airport, Osaka; Fondation Beyeler, Basel; Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center, Nouméa, New Caledonia; The New York Times Building, New York; Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens; and the Whitney Museum’s new building in downtown Manhattan. A complete list and description of all exhibited projects will be available at the exhibition.

Pop-Up Pool at Brooklyn Bridge Park Reopens For the 2013



The pop-up pool at Pier 2 of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is reopening for the summer starting June 27, 2013. The 30’ by 50’, 3.5 feet deep pool will be open for the second year from 10 am to 6 pm seven days a week through Labor Day (Monday, September 2, 2013). The area immediately surrounding the pool, which will be serviced by a new concessionaire, Lizzmonade Brooklyn, is bordered by the sandy beach with lounge chairs, picnic tables, and umbrellas where visitors can rest, enjoy snacks, or soak up the sun from 10 am to 11 pm.

Change of State Exhibition and Projection at the New Museum



“Change of State” (2013) is a site-specific projection on the façade of the New Museum. Curated and produced by Nuit Blanche New York (NBNY), the project continues a tradition that began with “Let Us Make Cake” (2011) during the inaugural Festival of Ideas for the New City where moving images are projected on to the facade of the New Museum.

77 Million Paintings, Brian Eno



Pioneering composer and producer Brian Eno brings his acclaimed audio-visual installation to the former location of Café Rouge for its East Coast debut. 77 Million Paintings is a generative work – making itself as you watch it – which explores a vast set of permutations of visual and sonic elements made by Eno. The result is “between music and painting”. The exhibition will be accompanied by an “Illustrated Talk” on May 6 in which Eno will discuss this work and its genesis.

This comprehensive personal and scholarly history chronicles how at 27, Phyllis Lambert, daughter of Seagram founder Samuel Bronfman, took over the search for an architect to build a New York corporate headquarters and chose Mies van der Rohe, resulting in an iconic modern landmark. Designed with Philip Johnson, the 38-story tower also established Lambert as a leading architectural patron and played a substantial role in shaping landmark legislation and zoning laws in New York City.

Architecture Inserted Book Launch



Friday the 21st will be a big day at Van Allen Bookstore. ‘Architecture Inserted’ will be launched with YSOA Dean Robert A.M. Stern, Nina Rappaport and our very own Francisco Waltersdorfer who co-edited the publication.

The book chronicles research and projects grappling with issues of how to insert new pieces of architecture into sites where existing physical and social issues are at conflict. Tribeca Film Festival Kicks Off



Now in its 12th year, the Tribeca Film Festival got its start when founders Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff sought to celebrate NYC as a film-making center. Running from April 17-28, you can catch feature films, documentaries, and film shorts chosen from over 5,000 submissions and coming from around the world. Venues vary for each screening, so make sure to check out the interactive festival map before you make any plans.

In this year's feature films, catch the likes of Julianne Moore, Emma Roberts and John Cusack, Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd.
